I had always wondered why a meter maid was called such. Turns out it was because when parking meters were introduced a businessman in Queensland, Australia hired attractive women to top up peoples parking meters with coins and leave a calling card under the windscreen wiper. It still happens today. Not sure it will catch on in York though, slipping in £2.60 minimum, in a bikini, in wet, cold and probably windy England.
